Horse Bench

Horse Bench Trail is not really a trail in the usual sense! It is an unmarked slickrock playground connected by an old mining road. The road and slickrock eventually led to a bluff overlooking the Green River. The slickrock is not the smooth, open expanse variety found in Moab, but more of the broken, free flowing type found elsewhere in the San Rafael Swell. The fun and challenge of Horse Bench is finding your way across the slickrock to the river! You are limited only by imagination, and the many narrow canyons along the way! Don't let the drive out to Horse Bench scare you off! The scenery and variety of riding get much better out on the trail!!
How to get there: From Rays Tavern in Green River, head south, pass under I-70 following the signs for the Green River airport. At mile 2.91 the road forks (38,57.725 N 110,11.239 W) take the left fork. It is signed for the San Rafael Desert. Follow the graded dirt road until you pass Horse Bench Reservoir (on your right). The trail head is just past the reservoir at 11.46 miles. (38,50.933 N 110,12.981 W)
Length: 12.50 miles (out and back), but can vary greatly due to "play time" on the rock!
